Petition asks for Congress to stop false allegations

While real allegations of domestic violence are made every day, it may surprise some people to know just how common false allegations are. These are sometimes made as a way to manipulate people, to get revenge for some perceived wrong, or to blackmail people into doing what others want. Those who have signed the petition warn that lives can be ruined this way, asking for Congress to step in and put a stop to it.

Accusations of marital rape need to be taken seriously

Domestic violence takes many forms, and one of them is rape. Even within a marriage or intimate relationship, rape is illegal throughout the country. If a spouse or partner does not consent to sexual acts or is unable to consent because of alcohol, drug or any other type of impairment, those acts are illegal.

Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman assault charges unfounded

In domestic violence incidents, it can be hard to take the initial charges as fact when emotions are over the top. Anger sometimes incites a person to make accusations when they are unwarranted. Unfortunately, even unwarranted accusations can ruin someone's reputation, or worse, land them behind bars for an unspecified amount of time. Trying to take back charges once they have been made is not always an option. Even when the accuser wants to have the charges dropped, the alleged violator can still be prosecuted by the State.

Defense for domestic violence may need strengthened

A new report out about Florida crime may have an effect on those accused of domestic violence. If you have been unfairly charged with a domestic violence charge, you may need a strong defense to argue your case. Florida intends to crack down, which means it will be harder to prove your innocence.

How much do you know about plea bargains?

Unless you are a judge, an attorney or a prosecutor, your education about plea bargains may be limited. For instance, what exactly is a plea bargain and how does it work? If you are facing criminal charges -- for instance, charges of assault and battery, domestic abuse or other violent crimes -- you may be offered a plea bargain by the prosecuting attorney. Should you take it?

What happens when you have an injunction against you?

Injunctions, also known as "restraining orders," are orders from the court that do not allow you to go within a certain distance of a person or person(s). These are usually ordered to protect someone who claims to be a victim or potential victim of abuse. You may have an injunction ordered against you, for instance, if you and your spouse or another party have had a scuffle or if the other party claims you have been abusive or threatening to them.
