Child
support is a financial
contribution paid by the non-custodial parent to the
residential parent towards the expenses of raising his or her
children.
The amount of child support
to be paid is subject to the child support guidelines of the
State of Florida, or the State which has jurisdiction.
Under certain circumstances,
when child support payments are not made by the parent ordered
to pay child support, the court may order wage garnishment,
or contempt charges may be brought against the child support
offender, which could lead to incarceration if found to be
in contempt.

Relevant factors which may be
considered when determining child support include, but may
not be limited to:
-
Child custody arrangements;
-
How much parenting time each parent has;
-
The income of the parents;
-
Total number of children;
-
Unusual medical expenses;
-
Day care expenses;
-
And insurance, among other factors.
If either party's financial
standing or other relevant factors significantly change,
either party may petition the court to seek an increase or
decrease in the amount of child support to be paid. This is
considered a post judgment child support modification.
A modification to court
ordered child support may also be negotiated through
mediation, and if agreed upon by both parties, the child
support modification must still be made official by asking
the court to agree and sign-off on the child support
modification agreement.
